About Us
Nandi is Afrikaans for ´black and beautiful´ in Zulu.
The Nandi charity was founded in 1996
by John and Doreen Piteleen. Concerned about the number
of stray dogs and cats in the Algarve, they set up a charity
with the aim to raise funds for a sterilisation program,
veterinary treatment, and animal food.

They named the charity ‘Nandi’ after their beautiful black dog
that came to them as a stray.

Today, Nandi is a registered charity, with two thriving shops
close to the Terras do Infante Public Hospital and Intermarché.
Both shops are very popular with both the Portuguese
and ex-pat communities, as well as holidaymakers.

One shop sells homeware and furniture and the other shop,
just next door, is packed full of clothes, bric-a-brac, toys and books.

What We Do

with select veterinarians to help provide treatment and sterilisation to stray
and abandoned cats and dogs.

which include dogs, cats,
horses and donkeys.

The Nandi Charity donates food
and provides funds for the purchase of food stray and abandoned animals,
run by independent groups of feeders,
